Being able to administer first aid in an emergency is essential for my role as a Personal Trainer and Fitness Instructor, so you will be pleased to learn that I have re-qualified this month. Every three years I attend a first aid training session to ensure I know exactly what to do in case of an emergency.

It was such an interesting day it made me wonder why more people don’t take the time to learn first aid because it really is a useful skill.  A first aid course will teach you to recognise an emergency and give first aid to the injured or ill person until an ambulance arrives.

Learning basic first aid techniques can help you cope with an emergency, when other people might be in a panic. Because you know what to do you will find it easier to remain calm and provide support. You may even find yourself able to keep a person breathing, reduce their pain or minimise the consequences of injury or sudden illness until an ambulance arrives. This could mean the difference between life and death for them.

During my informative day (the tutor was really great at getting us all motivated to learn on a Sunday!) I was reminded about the ABC of first aid. Airway, breathing and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) along with other important aspects that relate to having an action plan ready for any emergency situation.

Remember the Vinnie Jones advert? Hard & fast (for adults), hands only CPR. Just keep that song in your head. You could save a life.
